Temporary reception during winter

Fedasil can temporarily make use of various sites to accommodate asylum seekers.

As in previous winters, Fedasil can count on various accommodations that are generally unoccupied outside the tourist season.

The Fedasil centre in Bredene (West Flanders) reopened for instance at the end of October. This building is usually intended for school groups and can accommodate 313 asylum seekers. Since the beginning of November, Fedasil has also been using a campsite in Theux (Liège) which can accommodate up to 250 people. This is not the first time Fedasil has been present in Theux and Bredene: both sites have been used several times as reception centres, each time for a few months.

In parallel, asylum seekers are also accommodated in buildings belonging to the Flemish youth sector. These accommodations are not used by schools or youth movements during the winter. Six sites are (or will soon be) operational, for a total of 300 places.

This temporary reception capacity enables Fedasil to compensate for the closure of several places (including the Fedasil centre in Jabbeke) and to guarantee sufficient capacity during the winter period.

Most of the temporary reception sites will close in the spring of 2026.

Fedasil's reception network currently counts 35,000 places in 105 collective centres and individual units managed by Public Centres for Social Welfare (CPAS/OCMW) and NGOs.
