Resettlement* is a legal and safe migration path for vulnerable refugees. The program, run by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), involves selecting and transferring refugees from a State where they have sought protection to another State which agrees to receive them as refugees.
Since the first resettlement operations in the ’50, the programme has given millions of people the opportunity to safely build a new life in a third country.
*The Belgian resettlement program is currently suspended until the reception crisis is under control, the backlog of decisions has been cleared, and the reception network has been scaled down (Federal Government Agreement, 2025–2029).
