From Cape Town to Belgium: Building a New Life
I’m Josh, born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. Four years ago, I came to Belgium to complete my studies and find my way in a new environment. Growing up in a multicultural society, I always knew I wanted to work with people. However, the academic path often felt distant. What drives me is human connection – and I have found it in abundance at Fedasil.

Social Expert at Fedasil: A Daily Enrichment
Although I had little experience in the asylum sector, I found my way as a social expert. Since I started five months ago, I’ve been able to channel my passion for people into making a meaningful contribution to the lives of asylum seekers. The work is challenging, but the gratitude and trust of the residents give me energy.

Challenges and Solutions
Working in an asylum center is far from easy. Every day brings new challenges: complex problems, people struggling with themselves and their environment, and situations that often have no simple solutions. Yet there are just as many days filled with meaningful encounters, where listening and guiding are central. This creates a deeper bond with the residents, and the feeling that you’re truly making a difference.

No Day is the Same
A constant in my work? The variety. Every day is different, with new situations and problems. Some people might find that difficult, but I see it as something exciting. It keeps me sharp and allows me to be creative in finding solutions.

How People React to My Work
When I tell people what I do, I often notice that they show respect and appreciation. The challenges that asylum seekers face are well-known, and many people admire the work I do. On the other hand, there are also reactions that are less positive. Nevertheless, it remains a privilege for me to share stories from this sector and to build a bridge between different worlds.
