The Belgian authorities of different levels of government are working together to best accommodate Ukrainian people who have fled their country.

Since 10 March 2022, 77,636 temporary protection certificates have been issued by the Immigration Office, including 15,343 certificates during the year 2023. After massive arrivals of persons in the first weeks of the conflict, there are currently still between 400 and 450 persons arriving each week in our country.

25% of the people who came to the registration centre expressed the need for an accommodation solution. Fedasil has therefore referred 18,000 displaced people from Ukraine to temporary crisis shelters in collaboration with the Regions and the municipalities of our country.

End of 2023, there were 58,861 persons under temporary protection listed in the National Register. 59% of the refugees of Ukraine were in Flanders, 22% in Brussels and 19% in Wallonia.

Temporary protection? Displaced persons from Ukraine can register on Belgian soil to receive temporary protection. These persons don't have to apply for asylum and are therefore not accommodated in the regular reception network of Fedasil.
